Teeth whitening in Sharjah
Two treatments in one appointment — the whitening, and the cleaning it needs to work properly.
Most clinics whiten teeth that have not been cleaned first, which is why the result often disappoints. Surface tartar and staining sit on top of the enamel — bleaching them achieves very little.
So we do both. Scaling and polishing removes what is sitting on the surface, then the whitening works on the natural shade of the tooth underneath. One visit, one price.
How much lighter you go depends on where you start and why your teeth are stained. We will give you a realistic answer before we begin, not afterwards.
When you need it
- Your teeth have yellowed gradually over the years
- Years of tea, coffee, karak or smoking have taken their toll
- You have an event coming up
- Your teeth look darker in photographs than you expect
- Cleaning has been done and you still want them lighter
What happens at the appointment
A check first
Whitening gel on a decayed tooth or inflamed gum hurts, and whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings. Ten minutes of checking prevents a bad result.
Scaling and polishing
Included in the price. Whitening works on the tooth surface, so stain and tartar sitting on top of it have to come off first or the result is patchy.
Protecting the gums
A barrier is placed along the gumline so the gel works on enamel only.
Whitening
The gel is applied and activated in cycles, with the shade checked between each one so we stop at the right point rather than an arbitrary one.
Afterwards
Avoid anything that would stain a white shirt for the first forty-eight hours — coffee, tea, karak, cola, curry, tomato sauce, red wine, and above all smoking. The enamel is temporarily more porous and takes up colour fast.
Some sensitivity to cold for a day or two is common and settles on its own. A sensitive toothpaste in the week beforehand reduces it noticeably.
Worth knowing
What the price includes
In-clinic whitening and a full scaling and polishing, in one appointment. Most clinics charge for the cleaning on top, then charge again for the whitening. We do not, because one does not work properly without the other.
What whitening cannot do
It will not change the colour of a crown, veneer or white filling — they stay exactly the shade they were made, which can leave them looking dark against newly whitened teeth. It works less well on grey discolouration than on yellow. And a single tooth that has darkened after an injury usually needs a different treatment altogether. We will tell you what result to expect before you pay, not after.
How long it lasts
Six months to two years, depending almost entirely on what you drink and whether you smoke. Heavy tea, coffee and karak drinkers are at the shorter end. A scale and polish once or twice a year keeps it looking fresher for longer.
Common questions
How long does it last?
Typically one to two years, less if you smoke or drink a lot of tea, coffee or cola.
Will it make my teeth sensitive?
Some people get mild short-lived sensitivity. Tell us if you already have sensitive teeth.
Does it whiten crowns or fillings?
No. Whitening only works on natural tooth. If you have front crowns or fillings we will discuss this first.
Is it safe for enamel?
Professionally applied whitening does not damage enamel. The risk with over-the-counter kits and salon whitening is uncontrolled gel on unprotected gums.
How many shades will I go up?
Typically two to four shades. We check the shade against a guide before and after so you can see the actual difference rather than take our word for it.
Can I whiten if I have sensitive teeth?
Usually yes. Tell us beforehand and we adjust the strength and timing, and start you on a sensitive toothpaste in the week before.
